The crap I get sent
I received some more verbal diarrhoea in this issues Kemptown Rag. Quoted from the article submitted by Margot Bristow [Ma Fine Art] on 10th November 2006:
“This series of photographic images explores the concept of identity. Our identities are formed out of a subjective experience of the self, and the image that represents that self in the context we find ourselves.
In this work, 2D images are set in resin to create 3D objects. This interactive process is one which isolates an image of the self, both physically and aurally. As a deaf artist, I am exploring the effect of the absence of sound on our memories of people and place.
Through the process of setting the images in resin, the subjective identification of the individual is cut off from its source, leaving the resin objects standing as metaphors for the self. Washed up like pebbles on the beach, these fragments are cut off from sound, constrained; the identities having remade themselves in the process of re-membering and, through this, the memories have become fictitious. ”

Report UK spammers
If you have received any Spam from a company in the UK, then report them to the Information Commissioner department. It is illegal to send bulk emails without opt-in in the UK, so spammers can be successfully prosecuted.
If you want to filter out the crap in the first place, I highly recommend an efficient it of free German software: Spamihilator.

My desktop
I really dislike anything on my desktop (including the "My computer" set of icons). I located this image from Caedes.net, a large and free wallpaper website.
What does your desktop look like?

Virus scanner double act
Before I start, this is not related to my previous entry in any way. While trying to sort out a broken hard drive, I downloaded a dodgy program that installed a virus (W32.Pinfi) that attached itself to the first few hundred .EXE files on the main drive.
The Mcafee online free scan picked up the virus first. I tried the trial version of AVG 7, but it failed to fix any of the infected files. To my surprise, Norton Antivirus did not detect any problem when I ran a full system scan. However, it did decide to act when I ran a scan from the trial version of AVG 7.

It took one virus scanner to "look" at the files and the other to fix it. What a strange way to sort the problem?
Back to my first problem, does anyone know how to sort out my NTFS hard drive? Even though I have not formatted it, everything from start to end seems to be completely void of files. I cannot find any drive or partition tools that can fix the drive. Suggestions very welcome (a bottle of wine/book/dvd to anyone with something that works).

Virus messages
In response to a client forwarding me an email with the subject: Virus alert!!...
“It is bad form to send people notices about viruses. However bad the virus may be to someone else - it ain't causing a problem for me or you.
These emails simply have a counter-productive role in combating antivirus. Some of these emails even contain the virus itself.
So, in the future delete such stupid emails (usually sent by idiots). They really don't serve any purpose and may actually be harmful.”

My server downloads
I have been on the phone to EV1 Servers this evening trying to work out why I could only connect to my server at 15 Kb/s on my 8 Mbit connection. They told me the that there was a problem somewhere in the first email, then a little later on they reported that everything was fine. I am a little worried that such a powerful server is being let down by a variable connection.
A puzzle publisher in UK is interested in some Sudoku puzzles. It looks like there will be Sudokus from supersudoku.com all over the world in no time. Lydia is just finishing the second version of the Sudoku generator program. It takes slighly longer to generate the 3×3 puzzles, but now their quality is unsurpassed. The Sudoku generator website will be able to create Sudokus that would normally be reserved for books and magazines. These Sudoku puzzles will focus on the actual difficulty of the human logic used to solve, rather than more obvious factors.

Getting domains
This week I successfully grabbed the domain name dahost.com for the hosting website and server already at dahost.net. At the beginning of the month someone tried to sell me their services to get the domain name as it expired, but I managed just fine using the Snapnames service.

Earlier this week I successfully moved the website at Ooohh.com to my Xenacia server without the previous website designer being any the wiser. He was refusing to give any kind of control to the owner of the Ooohh.com, despite the fact that she had fully paid for the design and maintenance.
“We were recently asked by the owner of Ooohh.com to make available the code and the database we created for ooohh when we helped them out when they lost their previous hosting arrangement.....
Despite assurances they were not moving hosting we now find a new site, with our code and database, minus of course our "designed by information", hosted elsewhere. While we have no problem with clients moving hosts we did state that we required one months notice if they were to move, plus retention of our "designed by label". (Under the law we retain intelectual property rights on the code used). Of course none of this has been honoured!
We consider this as gross breach of our rights, and have advised them of the following:
1) To remove all photos and details of our clients
2) That we intend to pursue matters to protect our hosting and property rights.
This is not the first time, why do people need to be so underhanded, I will never understand it.”
This is all so wrong is funny. Why would anyone want to post such crap news on their own "website designer" pages? From any angle, this is grossly unprofessional - this type of (ex)client commentary should be kept to a blog (if it really must to go somewhere). I have to point out that he has made a really poor effort to pursue his legal matters - no one has received any communication from him. Its not that the site actually belongs to him anyway...
There is a very good reason why people are underhanded, they don't want to lose their own websites. Why would anyone want their business controlled by someone who can do whatever they choose and self-promote their services for their own financial gain?
The Sudoku website is doing very well, with well over 1,000 members now and almost 3,000 Sudoku puzzles generated since we launched the generators last Wednesday. The site now brings in around 40,000 hits a day. Lots of other things are taking off much more quickly than we expected. The Sudoku syndication is attracting attention from all over place. It looks like there will soon be quite a lot of printed media with our name on in the very near future.
There are still some Sudoku left at the Redroaster cafe. Around 100 of these disappear each day.

Spamming on ICQ with authorizations
I am continually receiving authorizations on my ICQ from two different users with a URL as their alias. I could ignore the user from the authorization window, but that would make no difference as there is a new ICQ number each time.
It is very clear that the ICQ staff hasn't really paid much attention on what people do to get their website noticed. How difficult would it be for them to block spammer's websites being displayed as their username?
Why don't they introduce a challenge before allowing people to request authorization or send a message? Trillian and many other messaging clients now use these features to stop spammers. ICQ should get a move on with implementing some anti-spam features that actually work.

It goes on Google
Its strange how quickly Google lists this page. Within a few hours of writing something here - Google will have it up for everyone to see. This blog is getting more and more similar to a seminar about my work and life in general.

Retrospective for one month
This year was meant to see the start of a new blog, but I couldn't decide upon a good platform on which to write this. On returning from Australia someone mentioned MovableType, a tool that I have previously installed for others, so here it is with its very own Nahoo subdomain.
I'll be starting the blog with an account of my travels in Australia last month, writing 30 days in retrospect. Febuary is a short month, so I might as well start now to try and align the dates to some degree.
